1955
In 1954 the town approved $160,000 for the construction of a new combined Police and Fire station. The building was designed to surpass the requirements of both departments at that time with 7,000 square feet of space. 2,000 square feet for the Police department and 5,000 for the Fire department easily accomodated the respective department's personel, technological and equipment needs.
The project was completed in 1955 for $144,115.44, and was occupied on October 4 of that year with great pomp and ceremony
In the 1955 Maynard Annual report:
Police Chief stated in his report, "The new Police a Fire Station has aided this Department considerably in performing the Police Department's duties"
Board of Fire Engineers report added, "The new quarters are a credit to the Town and a source of much favorable comment from visiting persons who inspect it."
Today
Although the current station building has served the town and departments well for more than 50 years, much has changed, except the building. The lack of any important capital expenditures for renovations as well as the growing equipment and manpower requirements have rendered the building inadequate for needs of today's Police and Fire departments. The health and safety risks alone warrant action by the town.
Here are some comparisons between 1955 and 2005.
